Reminders for the next 3 weeks

Swim Reminders
You can always go to the blog for updates   www.vcsswimteam.blogspot.com

We have 3 weeks left of swim team.  Here is what you can expect:

The Nampa Rec scheduled their meet for 4 pm.  Swimmers are excused at 2:50.  This allows you time to drive, eat (bring dinner) and change to be ready to swim.

The District meet is also on a Tuesday.  We have to be on deck, ready to go at 3:45pm.  Swimmers are excused 2pm to drive to the West YMCA, eat and/or bring dinner and change to be ready to swim.  District is a long swim meet.  Bring things to keep you occupied, like homework.  J

The State swim tournament is Friday, Nov 4th.  Swimmers have to be in line to get a spot at 9am.  Doors open at 10:30.  Warm ups are at 11:45 and the Meet starts at 1:30.  It is an all-day event.  Again, you need to plan on sitting around so bring things to keep yourself occupied.  Even if you aren’t swimming at State, you are welcome to come along and support the team.  Bring pom poms, cow bells, paint your face etc.  If you are racing, you will need to bring breakfast, lunch and a snack.  We have over 700 swimmers racing that day and it takes a long time to get to all the events.

Swim Team Pictures are coming up after the District swim meet on Wednesday, October 25th at 5:30 at the Caldwell Y.  Please wear your team suit and your team SWEATSHIRT.

We haven't had a meet in two weeks but have been training hard for our next home meet, which is this Saturday at the Caldwell Y.  Warm ups start at 9.  Please be dressed out and on deck before 9.  Remind parents to bring camp chairs and water.

We also have practice all of fall break.  I understand if you booked trips at this time.  I, too, am sneaking away for a few days.  Remember, you can still exercise away from the pool while you are gone.  :)

Quick Reminders

We have our first "away" swim meet this Saturday at 8:30am at the Nampa Rec Center.  I know it seems early for a Saturday but this mean going to bed early on Friday night.  It also means getting up early enough to eat before you swim. Good nutrition is vital to a great race.

Sweatshirts are in and 1st Meet Info

I am sooooooo excited!   Our team sweatshirts and caps are in.  Please make sure to stop by H-2 or see me before practice tonight.

Meet Info
Our first swim meet is this Saturday at the YMCA.   Even though the meet starts at 2:00pm, swimmers must be on deck, dressed out at 12:45.  This is a "home" meet, which means we need to set up and clean up.  Most meets run around 2 hours.  It is important to stay the whole time.

Meet Etiquette
1.  Show up on time.  Be dressed out and ready to go.
2.  Help out.
3.  Find a coach or team captain with a "heat sheet" and get your swimmer's tattoo. (This will have all your event info like what event you are in, your heat #, and your lane #)
4.  Keep track of what event is going on . . . .be behind the starting blocks at least 2 heats before you race.
5.  Get your time from the timers and report it back to the coach.
6.  Cheer on your teammates!
7.  Stay for the whole meet
8.  Clean up afterwards

Race Etiquette
1.  Show up to your races early. (around 2 heats early)
2.  Listen to the announcer.  Sometimes, they give extra directions
3.  When you are standing on the block, picture the race in your mind.  Think about fast dives, long streamlines, strong strokes, good flip turns, and "slamming into the wall" finishes.
4.  Do all the skills mentioned above.
5.  When you finish your race, STAY IN THE POOL, until the last swimmer in the race finishes.  Further on in the season, we stay in the pool and the next race will dive over our heads.  Then you may get out.

Swim season is in full swing!

It is hard to believe that we finished our second full week of swim team!  I have some rather exciting news, but our little Vision Charter team happens to be the biggest in Canyon County with 17 swimmers strong!  Here are some reminders for this week:

Remember that practice is 5 days this week. If you are going to miss, make sure to text me.

Also remember to be eating right!  This means fruit, vegetables, lean protein and lots of water.

Both team suits and sweatshirts have been ordered and should be here before our first meet on Saturday, September 10th.

Information on the 2016-2017 Swim Season

I know it is hard to think about next year when this one isn't even over yet, but it is time to start recruiting for High School Swim Team.  The swim season always starts before school does, so I have to recruit at the end of each year.  Listed below are some FAQs for first time swimmers.  If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email me.

                                                                 FAQs

How long does the season run?
The high school swim season starts mid-August and ends with the State Tournament the first week in November.

             What are the practice times/days?
Times this year are not set yet, but the last 3 seasons there were two options:  5:30 – 7:00 am or/and 5:30 – 7:00pm.  Practice is 5 days a week.  You must attend 85% of the practices in order to participate at a swim meet.  Always send the coach a text or email if you cannot attend practice, along with the reason.

                 What are the costs?
a.       Things you need to buy:
1.       YMCA 3 month youth membership (this is based on income)
2.       Team membership $150.00 for the season
3.       Practice suits (can be purchased on-line at Swimoutlet.com for around $15.00 – 20.00)
4.      Good googles (cheap googles don’t last and leak – Swimoutlet.com and Big 5 sporting goods sell
       them for around $20.00)
5.      Practice Cap ( Swimoutlet.com, Big 5 and the Swim and Run Shop sell them for around $3-5.00)
b.      Things I purchase for you:
1.       Team Sweatshirt
2.      Team Racing Suit (cannot be worn at practice)
3.      Team Racing Cap (cannot be worn at practice)

Can I ride Bus #5 to the YMCA after school?
Yes!  Most swimmers just take the bus to the Y after school.  There is time to do homework or dry land   training.  You have to go to the Caldwell YMCA and get the paperwork to ride the bus.  It is at the front desk.

       Can I letter in swimming?
Yes! You must either meet the State Tournament qualifying times or go to State on a relay team.

Can I use swim team as a PE credit?
Yes! You have to keep track of the hours you swim and the coach must sign off on your tracking log.

Do I need to be an excellent swimmer to join swim team?
No, however, you do need to be able to swim 1 lap in the YMCA pool.  Swimmers are divided at practice according to ability.  I do suggest you join a summer swim team, take lessons and/or take the time to brush up on your strokes before swim season starts in mid-August.  We hit the ground running!

Do I have to try out to be on the team?
No, everyone is accepted, however, faster swimmers get first pick of events and relays.
